Easter Thursday, March 20th, 2008, is for Iranians the world over their Persian New Year - Noros. According to their calendar, which I think is considered lunar calendar, did their New Year Celebrations commence this morning 6.50. It was preceded with the Tuesday night before and jumping over fires (tjaharshanbehsori). Today is New Years Eve and in 13 days their sabzi will be thrown out and people will have picknick the entire day until the sun sets.
Many Iranians have today made their New Years Table (haft sin - seven things beginning in s):
* hyacinth (sonbol) * a tray with growing grass (sabzi) * some sort of sweet, dry fruit which taste a little like dates (sendjed) * some spice (somagh) * red apples (sib) * gold coins - other coins are also accepted - (sekkeh) * vinegar (serkeh)
Furthermore there will also be:
* a mirror * painted eggs * the Koran (but some instead have the poems by the poet Hafez) * a clock * cookies and nuts
Important to know is that the Persian New Year Celebrations is a celebration which preceded Islam being brought to Iran. It has to do with a pre-islamic religion with a profet called Zarathustra and a goddess called Ahura Mazda and a religion called Parsism or Mazdaism.
