The Socialist International expresses its strongest condemnation of the horrendous act of terrorism perpetrated against the United Nations' offices in Baghdad today, taking the lives of many serving the international community in the cause of peace and cooperation.

This cowardly act is an attack on the Iraqi people and the world community supporting their efforts to build a free, democratic, united and independent Iraq, and it is an attack against an institution which represents the will for peace of all the nations of the world.

The Socialist International pays tribute to the UN personnel and other victims of this atrocity, and mourns the untimely loss of Sergio Viera de Mello, the Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General, a man deeply dedicated to his mission and widely respected. The United Nations and the world have lost a gifted diplomat and an outstanding public servant.

The Socialist International reiterates its repudiation of all acts of terror, its commitment to continue working for a peaceful, stable and democratic Iraq and its solidarity with the Iraqi people and their political forces striving to that end.
