The Summit of Europe's social democratic prime ministers and party leaders in Brussels tonight welcomed the signing of the Geneva Accord between Israeli and Palestinian political figures.
A statement issued by PES President Robin Cook said: 'We congratulate the delegations on both sides on their success in demonstrating that it remains possible to negotiate a framework for peace and on showing that there is a viable alternative to armed confrontation. We are encouraged by evidence of support for their peace plan within both communities.
'Whilst the PES recognises that it is for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples to resolve between them any detailed arrangements, we are convinced that the principle of land for peace must be the basis of any secure peace settlement.
'Stability in the Middle East must be a top priority for European foreign and security policy and the PES is committed to working with its partners on both sides to promote dialogue and to advance agreement.'
