Open letter to AKBAYAN

Dear friends and party colleagues,

The relationship between AKBAYAN and the Swedish Social Democratic Party has developed during the last years. On all levels of our parties, we have exchanged delegations, experiences and have had fruitful political discussions. Our party is impressed by the progress of AKBAYAN, both with the electoral successes and the ability to energise the base around the country. Your work is important in the ongoing struggle for deepening the democracy and diminish the economic and social gaps in the Philippine society.

It is therefore with great regret and worry that we learn that some of the distinguished party members and leaders of AKBAYN, most notably deputy party leader Ricardo Reyes, are subject to terrible threats of violence and even death.

We would like to express our solidarity with AKABAYAN in general and with the threatened persons in particular, and assure you that we are following the situation carefully. We have also notified our embassy, and our Social Democratic parliamentarians will rise the question in the Swedish Parliament.

Your work and struggle is important! We hope that you will have the strength to carry on, and wish with all our hearts that the cowardly threats will be eliminated and that only good things will happen to you.
